Early morning thoughts about time and causality

Winter landscape of Arpino (Italy)

December 12th, 2020

I woke up while it was still dark outside. Stars shined just like they would in the middle of the night. One really strong espresso and there I was on my bike riding through the incoming dawn. After almost 20 km I decided to take a break before a pretty steep climb. Landscape was amazing so I took a picture of the beautyful winter season we’re approaching so far.

It must have happened right there, on a small natural garden on the side of the road. I stepped on the final outcome of a dog’s digestion. I can’t blame the dog really. He even cared about doing it in a place where nobody is supposed to walk. Sadly, when I realized what I was carrying under my right shoe it was too late.

You may be wondering why one should share such a grotesque and disgusting story. Well, I can assure you that while I was riding the long way home my mind was focused not only on the idea of getting there the fastest I can so I could hose me and my bike completely. The smelly inconvenience reminded me of a story I once read and I just translated it to my condition.

Since the moment of Big Bang all cosmic events, including Earth formation 4.5 billions years ago, the spark of life, the extincion of dinosaurs and the coming of man (and the dog), contributed substantially to my unpleasant encounter. So I kept asking: was that “poop” just waiting for me?

It’s unquestionable that every action I did in my life, since the day I was born, took place in an unavoidable sequence of events that brought me onto my bike that morning. So it was for the dog choosing that spot as its own personal restroom.

What happens to everyone is indeed random, following the natural entropy of the Universe, but if we look at space-time as a fourthdimensional environment then we must admit that an external observer could look at me moving towards that fateful step just like a funny comic strip, always knowing it would happen in the end.

I believe that’s the question about all other questions. The one nobody could ever really answer definitely. So it doesn’t surprise me that stepping on dog’s poop is considered good luck in Italy. Yeah, good luck.

Also known as destiny.
